People will often abuse drugs and then drink alcohol excessively in order to come down from the high or to relax, this increases the risk of someone accidently overdosing or having an accident due to being under the influence.
The drugs that are most commonly abused include Vicodin, OxyContin and Demerol, which are used to relieve pain. Opioids attach to the receptors in the brain which control impulses and rewards, once these centers are crossed it leads to confusion for the individual. Other drugs which people might abuse include Xanax, Nembutal and Valium which are central nervous system depressants, people enjoy the numb and mellow feeling the drugs provide and if taken in large amounts, an overdose is very likely.
Prescription drug addiction is a very serious problem and without the help of my Christian drug treatment program, I know deep down I could have never gotten sober. Addiction is frightening and to deal with it on a daily basis makes a person feel as if sentenced to a life not worth living. Everything is in constant flux and a state of utter turmoil, nothing changed until I sought help and became clean and sober. A person should never be ridiculed or judged when seeking treatment, but rather supported and encouraged through the entire process to yield the most positive results possible.
Sadly, the suffering due to drug addiction is not only something that happens to the addict, but others that are involved will experience pain and problems as well. Families and friends that know the person has a genuine problem will wonder what to do to actually help and what not to do which would enable the individual. The person has to want to become clean and sober and be ready to stick with the decision in order to make the most of the treatment experience and have the best chance at a meaningful, better future.
